Undergraduate Student Research
Research Option

The College of Engineering Undergraduate Research Option in the Honors Program is designed to enhance undergraduate engineering students involvement in research with the expectation that they will be encouraged to pursue a graduate degree at MU. As such, this program will approve funds for undergraduate research. All students approved for this option also will be part of the College of Engineering Honors Program.

Recruitment:

The program will be advertised to students starting with their second semester sophomore year through the junior year. The intent is to have students begin their involvement during their junior year and continue through graduation; although, other time frames are possible.

Requirements:

  • Submission deadline: Winter 2008 applications must be received no later than close of business, February 1, 2008.
  • Students must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA
  • Students/faculty applying to the program should fill out the form. The program will approve research projects and funding on an availability basis and/or will match student and faculty interests as necessary. Faculty or students who already have common interests are strongly encouraged to submit joint requests.
  • Students must register for a minimum of three credit hours of a 4995 course in their department, e.g. MAE 4995.

Stipend:

Students will receive $1,000 per semester. Summer stipends of $1,000 also are available upon request. This is not a scholarship, but a stipend for up to 10 hours of work per week in a research/laboratory setting. This stipend has no impact on the student's eligibility for College scholarships.

Benefits:

Students in this research option program will be:

  • Exposed to research early in their academic careers.
  • Will have first hand experiences with research faculty and/or graduate students.
  • Will be able to shorten their graduate careers by obtaining graduate credit prior to graduation and developing expertise which will enable them to start immediately on a graduate-level research project upon entering graduate school.
  • Receive a BS diploma with "Honors Scholar" designation upon completion of the program.

Consistent with the Honors Program, students will be allowed to use six hours of undergraduate course work for their graduate degrees. They also may use their work experience in the laboratory as the basis for an Honor's thesis.

Students will be encouraged to jointly enroll during their last 15 hours of their BS degrees, so that any additional course work they take as undergraduates (and not required for their BS degree) can be used for graduate credit.

These funds will be used as "startup" funds for student involvement. It is envisioned that undergraduate student Support will be transferred to the research faculty member's grant account as soon as practicable. The college will typically provide support for four semesters.
