Engineering
Dean's Scholars Program

Purpose
The purpose of the Engineering Dean’s Scholars Program is to recognize, mentor and train our highest-achieving students in scholarship and leadership.

Dean’s Scholarship
Members of the Engineering Dean’s Scholars Program receive $1000 for the freshmen year, in addition to the $2000 Achievement Award.  The Dean’s Scholars Award is renewable for up to a total of 8 semesters or completion of your undergraduate degree, whichever comes first.  Renewal of the Dean’s Scholars Award is dependent upon maintaining a cumulative 3.5 GPA at the end of each spring semester. Both the Dean’s Scholars award and the Achievement award require the completion of at least one math and one science/engineering course each semester, or two science/engineering courses if math requirements are met.

Engineering Scholars FIG
Engineering Dean’s Scholars participate in the Engineering Scholars FIG (Freshman Interest Group) which is housed in Mark Twain Residence Hall.  Faculty-Scholar dinners will be held in the Mark Twain Dining Hall several times during the semester to allow the Scholars to meet with Engineering Faculty and to learn about the engineering profession and undergraduate research opportunities.  In addition, Dean Thompson will also hold sessions with the Scholars each semester.

Leadership and Mentoring
Dean’s Scholars will participate in leadership or mentoring activities during their sophomore, junior and senior years.  Examples of such activities include serving as Engineering Ambassadors or peer advisors for an Engineering FIG, participation in the Engineering Freshman Mentoring Program, or on the Formula and Solar Car Teams.  Students chosen for peer advisor positions will have their room and board covered in exchange for their services.

Program Requirements
Engineering Dean’s Scholars are required to participate in the Engineering Scholars FIG (Freshman Interest Group), live in Mark Twain Residence Hall for at least the first semester, and attend special sessions with Dean Thompson and other Engineering faculty.  As a condition for renewal, during the sophomore, junior, and senior years, Engineering Scholars will participate in leadership or mentoring activities such as Engineering Ambassadors or the Freshman Mentoring Program.  Students interested in graduate studies will be given opportunities to work with faculty on undergraduate research projects.

Students who have ACT math and composite scores of 32 or higher and a high-school rank in the top 10% of their class will be considered for the Dean’s Scholars Program.  Students who are close to these criteria may request an application by contacting the Engineering Dean’s Office at the address below.  Applications are also available for download from the College of Engineering scholarship webpage.  Consideration of students who don’t meet the suggested minimum criteria will be contingent upon available space in the program.  Applications are due April 1st.
